Knitting Holiday Gifts Without the December Panic

Handmade gifts are lovely until it is December 20th. Here is how to plan so you actually enjoy them.

You know the feeling. It is early December, you have four gifts planned and one sleeve finished. Handmade gifts are wonderful, but they need a plan, and the best time to make it is now.

Start with a list, not a pattern

Write down who you want to knit for. Next to each name, add one idea and how much time you honestly have. A cowl for a coworker and a sweater for a partner are very different promises.

Work backwards from the date

Pick the day the gifts must be done, a week earlier than you need, and count backwards. Give the biggest project the longest runway and start it first.

Match the gift to the knitting time

Hats, cowls, mittens and dishcloths are quick. Socks and shawls take longer. Sweaters need a long runway. If time is tight, knit something small and make it really good.

Keep a gift tracker

For every gift, note the yarn, needle size, size or measurements, and hours spent. When someone asks for the same thing next year, you will already have the answers. The Knitting Project Journal has templates for exactly this, including hour logs and row counters.

Leave a buffer

Blocking, weaving in ends and wrapping always take longer than you think. Leave a few days for them.

Gift knitting is a gift to yourself too. A plan turns December from a sprint into a cozy habit.
